BREAKING: Shiffrin Wins Opening Race in Are
American Mikaela Shiffrin squeaked by Italian Sofia Goggia in the super-G Tuesday morning by two hundredths, making herself a first time World Champion in the super-G. Shiffrin, coming off of a two-win weekend in Maribor, Slovenia, has now tied Vreni Schneider for the record of most wins in a single season, at 14 total wins.
The top five in the field packed in 0.15 seconds behind Shiffrin, and Switzerland’s Corine Suter snuck into third, 0.05 hundredths behind Shiffrin, and o.o2 hundredths ahead of Germany’s Viktoria Rebensburg.
Lindsey Vonn ran bib 16, just after Shiffrin, and tore through a red panel only a few gates below the start. Medical staff and course workers rushed over to assist her after she lost her right ski and tumbled into the safety netting. Vonn, never one to give up, shook off the fall, rose, and skied to the bottom of the course to thunderous applause, waving and smiling to her fans.
Her teammate, Laurenne Ross, also did not finish her run after tearing through a panel. She also rose and skied to the finish. Alice Merryweather finished in 22nd, coming from bib 37.
