BREAKING: Bansko Super-G Cancelled Due to Snow

Due to overnight snowfall, FIS announced on Saturday morning that the men’s World Cup super-G in Bansko, Bulgaria, has been cancelled.

“We expected this heavy snowfall,” explained men’s FIS Race Director, Markus Waldner. “It started a little bit later and is supposed to go on until one o’clock. The problem is that there is too much snow up there, more than expected, around 30 centimeters. We started with the machines, we had six snowcats on the track from five o’clock in the morning on and they actually did a great job but the safety installations on the side of the slope are completely under the snow. Also, in some sections the slope is quite damaged now with all the machine movement. This was the reason we could not race today.”

Weather forecasts look favorable going forward and organizers are hopeful that a giant slalom on Sunday will get off without any issues.

In an official communication, FIS also announced that Saturday’s super-G, as well as last month’s cancelled GS from Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, cannot and will not be rescheduled with the limited time left in the schedule before World Cup Finals in Soldeu, Andorra, March 11-17.

The men are now scheduled to race GS in Bansko on Sunday, February 24.
