Tina Maze, the 2013 World Cup overall champion, is likely to compete on a minimal basis and then retire during the 2017 season, according to unconfirmed reports from the Austrian newspaper Kleine Zeitung. Maze has scheduled a press conference for Oct. 20 in Soelden, Austria, where she is expected to make the official announcement about her future.

The Austrian newspaper cites Slovenian reporter Jurij Zavrsnik of the sports digest Ekipa as the source of its information on Maze’s plan. According to the report, Maze intends to participate in a farewell race, the giant slalom at Maribor on Jan. 7, 2017, before ending her World Cup career. Additionally, she may also complete limited downhill training this season with the intention of defending her World Championships gold in St. Moritz to add one final victory to her legacy.

The Slovenian super skier took a break from the circuit last season, working for Europsort as a television commentator amongst other endeavors like finishing her college degree.

“After 16 long and successful seasons, practicing all disciplines, I feel that my body and my mind need a longer rest than usual,” Maze wrote in her 2015 announcement. “I will allow myself a one year break before taking any further decision. I will use this opportunity to finish my degree and give some of my time for marketing and communication activities to my partners Stoeckli, Milka, Fila, Alpina Watches, Feel Slovenia, Zlatarna Celje and other projects that I have in mind.”

Fans will simply have to keep calm and speculate for a few more weeks before the official word is out.
