Italian Speed skier Nadia Fanchini will not compete in the next World Cup season. The 33-year-old native of Artogne has been engaged for many years with the current coach responsible for the men’s Europa Cup Technical Team, Devid Salvadori, and will become a mother at the beginning of December.

“We are really happy, I still have a hard time realizing what is happening,” Fanchini said. “Skiing has given me so much suffering and so many joys, even last winter it was not easy when you find it hard to climb the stairs and it will seem strange to me next year to not be at the starting gate. But becoming a mother was the dream of my life, a new challenge awaits me. I thank the Federation, the Fiamme Gialli Skiers Group, all the technicians, staff, and my teammates.”

Fanchini debuted ion the World Cup in the Alta Badia giant slalom in December of 2003. Since then, she has amassed 240 starts with two victories (a super-G in Lake Louise in November 2008 and a downhill in La Thuile in 2016) and thirteen podiums, a ninth place in the Overall World Cup in 2009 and two World Championship medals (bronze in the downhill in Val d’Isère 2009 and silver in the downhill at Schladming 2013).

Fanchini also boasts three Olympic appearances, with a fourth place in the GS at Sochi 2014 her best result. Unfortunately, Fanchini’s career has been turned upside down by an endless series of injuries that have greatly penalized her.

“The Federation congratulates Nadia and wishes her well because she deserves it,” said FISI President Flavio Roda declared. “Her career has unfortunately been affected by too many injuries, with her talent and the technique she possesses she could have won much more. Her merits, however, go further because despite the countless stops, she has been able to give prestige to Italian skiing and we thank her.”
