Italian speed skier Elena Curtoni took a bad fall during the Italian National Championships, which are currently underway in Bardonecchia, Italy. Curtoni has suffered a fractured ankle and laceration on her arm. Following the crash, she was taken to a local emergency room and then to Milan for further evaluation.

Her diagnosis was confirmed in Milan, and she received a cast on her left leg. It will be three months before she can return to full activity.

Curtoni was on the World Cup podium twice this season in super-G, earning second place in Crans Montana, Switzerland, and third place in Val d’Isere, France. She was also fifth in the 2017 World Championships super-G in St. Moritz, Switzerland. The Italian ended the World Cup season with a fourth-place ranking in super-G.
