WJC – 'Stable' Second run propels Kilde to GS gold

MONT-STE-Anne – A mistake from first run leader Gino Caviezel helped, but Norwegian Aleksander Aamodt Kilde posted a screaming second run and found himself winning the giant slalom gold medal in the World Junior Championships at Mont-Ste-Anne, Quebec. … handily.

Silver medal winner Italian Alex Zingerle was sixth after first run but well within range as the first 13 skiers were a second or less apart. Though he said his run didn’t feel fast, it proved to be plenty fast enough to conquer a bumpy track.

Slovene Zan Kranjec, the bronze medal winner, took his second run after Zingerle’s teammates had already begun celebrating at the edge of the finish area and said he was uncertain his time was going to stand up. “When I finished I was second, so I was nervous. I’m very happy,” he said. “I know I can make a good result. … I know it’s hard, but if I make a good result I know I can be in the top three.”

Kilde was rather matter of fact about his win. It was all hard work and steady skiing he said.

“I have just been training hard and working hard every day,” he said. His second run was, he said, “like what I do in training. It wasn’t anything special. I’m just stable when I ski. I can do my turns every turn.”

Which appears to be exactly what he did, arcing his way down the rolling La Crete/Beauregard trail that looks, from the top, like it drops into the wide St Lawrence basin.

Zingerle finish caused an eruption from a small group of teammates gathered on the narrow side of the finish fencing.

“In the first run I feel good with my skiing, but then in the second it was really turny and I didn’t feel that good,” he said. “Then across the finish my teammates tell me that I have a good advantage and I was surprised.”

He said, “It was bumpy conditions, I liked it.”

GS, he said, “is tradition in Italy. I think we are good because we see that in the World Cup they are good.”

The North Americans were at a disadvantage.  The new dimension skis made mandatory for the World Cup this season were also mandated for the Europa Cup and these championships. They were not for Nor Ams nor for any races save the December World Cup races on this continent. Canadian Trevor Philp was the only North American to finish in the top 15, posting 12th more than two seconds out.

“Our primary focus has been Nor Ams,” said Keiffer Christianson, a second run DNF. “We’ve been on the smaller radius skis. We’ve been diligent about still getting time on the 35m skis. … I warmed up on them for all races and what not. It’s a pretty easy transition to go from the bigger skis to the shorter… but not the other way around.”

In memoriam: The veteran of the staff, McKee started with Ski Racing in 1980. Over the seasons, he covered virtually every aspect of the sport, from the pro tours to junior racing, freestyle and World Cup alpine competition. He wrote the first national stories for many U.S. team stars, and was still around to report on their retirements. “Longevity has its rewards,” he said, “but it’s a slow process.”
