Whiteface NorAms conclude with Crawford sweep

NorAm action at Whiteface Mountain, New York, wrapped up on Friday with a men’s and women’s super G as well as a men’s alpine combined. When all was said and done, one family walked away with the shiniest hardware as Canadian national team members Candace and Jack Crawford combined to win all three races.

In the women’s super G, Candace took the victory with a total time of 1:05.08 seconds, 0.86 seconds ahead of her teammate Valerie Grenier who finished second and was also top junior on the day. Rounding out the podium in third was U.S. development team member Alice Merryweather, 1.04 seconds off the winning pace.

For the men, Jack’s time of 1:02.63 seconds took the win and top junior honors in the morning’s super G race by a razor slim 0.02 seconds ahead of the previous day’s winner Erik Arvidsson of the U.S. Ski Team. It was a tight squeeze on the podium as Canadian Tyler Werry snagged third place, just 0.06 seconds back. In fact, the top six finishers were all within 0.19 seconds of the winning time.

In the afternoon, James doubled down, winning the slalom run and the combined race with a total time of 1:41.11 seconds, 0.75 seconds ahead of Arvidsson in second. American Brennan Rubie managed to bump Werry off of the podium, moving up to third place at 0.90 seconds back.

At the conclusion of the series, Crawford took the lead in the women’s NorAm super G standings by only 10 points ahead of American Megan McJames, 230 to 220. McJames still leads the women’s overall standings with 845 points, 191 points clear of American Lila Lapanja in second place.

On the men’s side, Arvidsson widened his lead in the super G standings to 64 points over Werry, with Crawford in third, 92 points behind Arvidsson. Arvidsson also holds the lead in the combined standings by 10 points over Crawford. University of Denver skier Erik Read of Canada still holds the lead in the overall standings by 110 points over Crawford heading into the final portion of the season.

The NorAm series now takes a break until mid-March when the circuit moves to Aspen and Vail, Colorado, for the finals.
