Summer training heats up across the globe
It’s baseball, wakeboarding and barbecuing in most of the United States right now. But some Americans are training hard — and savoring some powder stashes — on the southern side of the world.

Rocky/Central rips in Chile
Rocky/Central Region Director Terry DelliQuadri passes on this photo (above) of Team Gilboa coach Scott “Scully” Skavenger neck deep in powder in Termas de Chillan, Chile. Skavenger is part of a group of five coaches and 28 athletes led by Rocky/Central coach Rob Worrell training in the Southern Hemisphere. Earlier this week, “training” was enjoying more than 20 inches of Chilean powder.
Soldiering on at Saas Fee
Racers from Soldier Mountain Alpine Racing in Fairfield, Idaho, also enjoyed some immense powder conditions. Training in Saas Fee, Switzerland, the crew sat out a three-day storm in Europe and went out to enjoy a 2-foot powder day. Ken Corrock's photo shows the lower training slope with spectacular powder conditions. The group includes Western region kids from Sun Valley, Soldier Mountain, Mount Hood Meadows and Sugar Bowl.
Watch out for potholes!
Ski racing is full of obstacles — bindings that release, overbearing parents, paparazzi media, and, of course, crevasses. C.B. Bechtel, program director for Loveland Racing Club on the Colorado Continental Divide, sent us this photo of a gnarly crevasse that opened up in the middle of the group's race lane in the Austrian Alps. The hole measured 3 feet across, but Loveland racers were able to avoid the hazard.
