St. Moritz: Brydon gets first win in super G

By Published On: February 3rd, 2008Comments Off on St. Moritz: Brydon gets first win in super G

Emily Brydon got her first World Cup win in the super G at St. Moritz Sunday. She recorded a masterful run down the same Corviglia track where she had her first World Cup podium seven seasons ago and where she had her first podium this season back in December.
Brydon put up a 0.25 of a second margin over Elisabeth Goergl of Austria for the win as the top skiers packed in close behind. Renate Goetschl was third 0.29 back, Lindsey Vonn fourth 0.30 back and the weekend's sensation, 16-year-old Lara Gut came in 0.38 behind. Nicole Hosp was sixth just 0.41 off the pace.
''It's like a dream I've had for years,'' Brydon said. ''I just let the skis go and I tried to create as much speed as possible.''

EMILY BRYDON got her first World Cup win in the super G at St Moritz Sunday.
"It's like a dream I've had for years,'' Brydon said. ''I just let the skis go and I tried to create as much speed as possible.''
It was the third win of the season for the Canadian team and one that had been anticipated in Saturday's downhill after Brydon had won all the training runs. Late runners in that race got much better conditions and Brydon wound up just off the podium in fourth.
Vonn was disappointed with fourth but remained in the thick of the chase for the overall title. She sits 91 points behind leader Hosp in second place.
''This is like the fifth time that I'm one hundredth off the podium and it's just a little bit disappointing,'' Vonn said. ''The fourth place is a really hard place to be, especially when it's only one hundredth.''
Goergl got her sixth podium finish of the World Cup season.
''I'm very content with the third place,'' Goergl said.
Kelly VanderBeek earned ninth on the day and Britt Janyk was tied for 15th as the Canadians proves strong. Libby Ludlow in 27th was the only other American scorer behind Vonn.
"No weather problems today. It was a fair race, which is what we always want," said U.S. coach Alex Hoedlmoser. Saturday, a mid-race weather change brought out the sun and speeded the course so a racer starting 47th could win. Brydon ran 12th in collecting her first World Cup win.
Hoedlmoser said he would have to analyze videos of the race to see where Vonn may have made a costly mistake "but she skied really well again. She had no major mistakes, but the race was so tight and unfortunately she was on the wrong side of the hundredths again to make the podium."
He added the other U.S. women skied well and didn't make any major mistakes, either, "although it doesn't show in the results." Mancuso, who finished third overall a year ago as she recorded her first four World Cup victories, was 38th. Hoedlmoser was mystified on what went wrong. "She nailed my section [where he observed the race] completely, and it's hard to figure what went wrong. We'll need to go over the video for Jules, too."

Near miss fuels Brydon's winning run
Brydon, who missed the podium in Saturday's downhill by just 0.03s, said she wasn’t going to let that happen again today.
“I definitely used yesterday to fuel me today,” said Brydon, who now sits second in the World Cup SG standings and 11th overall. “Today I just tried to stay in the moment. I knew it was possible but I needed to not think about the end and keep my focus on the moment, on the task at hand.”
“There’s no perfect runs. My top section was not ideal. It was ‘pretty skiing’ and I just kind of cruised,” said Brydon who had only the 19th fastest first interval. “So I just kicked myself in the butt and was like you don’t win races or even get on the podium with that so about a third of the way down I kicked into overdrive and it was great, it was the best feeling.”
Brydon was the fastest racer on the course for the final two-thirds of the piste and had the fastest speed of the day, reaching a top speed of 114.98 km/h.
Sunday's result is the ninth podium of the season for the Canadian team and the third victory.
