LAST FALL, U.S. Ski Teamer Caroline Lalive tore her ACL — again. “This is like my 18th or 19th surgery,” she told Ski Racing.
“Some of those were Lasik eye surgery, so if you don’t count those, 15 or 16. No one on the team has been through what I’ve been though. I’m in a league of my own.” However, the 28-year-old ski racing veteran is back. SR caught up with her while she was at U.S. Nationals working as a TV host. She talked about a recent adventure, the team and a career in TV (maybe).

Ski Racing: How’s your knee feeling?
Caroline Lalive: My knee feels great. I’ve always joked that I have a super power, which is healing. I’m a super healer.

SR: Hear you went on an epic adventure in March. What was the Coureur Des Bois race like?
CL: I did this ultra marathon in Steamboat. It was 50k and went from Colorado, up towards Wyoming and back down. It took 7 hours, classic cross-country skiing, went with two other friends. It was awesome. … I looked like such a gomer though. I’m in baggy ski pants and everyone else is in their tight little Swix racing gear. I did not fit in.

SR: So it wasn’t super competitive?
CL: The plan was that we were going to bring some wine and cheese, but that never happened. I had like a really sexy fanny pack [to carry it in].

SR: Did you have time to drink the wine?
CL: No you really didn’t.

SR: Were there any challenges?
CL: I put skins on the bottom for some of them [mountain passes] because it was so steep. There was a 90k, which people skate skied and/or classic skied. One guy classic skied the 90 and was like only 20 minutes behind me. I wanted to kill him, but he’s like a pro. … It wasn’t actually super tiring until the next day when my hip flexors were dead.

SR: With a healthy knee, do you plan on coming back to the team?
CL: I got cleared to ski and I hope to be back training with the team in May for Mammoth or wherever we go. We’ll see what happens.

SR: Do you have a future as a TV personality?
CL: It’s pretty fun for me. I like it. I’d love to get into TV more. I don’t know about [covering] just solely skiing. I’d like to be able to do more broad something or other whether it’s commentating … I like it though, it’s fun.
