After one run, it’s Finn veteran Tanja Poutiainen in the lead of a World Cup night slalom in Flachau, Austria today (Jan. 11).

France’s Nastasia Noens stands second, 0.21 seconds back followed by overall leader, Germany’s Maria Riesch in third, 0.41 seconds behind. Italy’s Manuela Moelgg is only seven hundredths of a second behind Riesch in fourth.

Some top competitors were taken out in the first run as Austrian Nicole Hosp, Slovenian Tina Maze and American Lindsey Vonn, along with 21 other racers, failed to finish the 64-gate Griessenkar course set by U.S. coach Trevor Wagner. It’s Vonn’s fourth consecutive first-run DNF in a World Cup slalom.

“My SL troubles continue! Another disappointing SL race for me, that is 4 DNF’s in a row,” Tweeted Vonn after the run. “I am not exactly thrilled right now, but I have been training really well and the bad luck has to turn around eventually…..I hope.”

Winner of the last three World Cup slaloms and four this season, Austrian Marlies Schild showed her first sign of being human in weeks, finishing 1.40 seconds off the leading pace in 10th.

The American women struggled to find the rhythm on the course set by their coach. Resi Stiegler lost her balance coming out of the start gate while Julia Mancuso lost time at every split to finish 4.12 seconds behind the leader and Hailey Duke straddled a gate in the middle of the course. Only Sarah Schleper, the lone U.S. skier to see a World Cup slalom second run in the past three races, made the 30-woman second run in 27th, 3.27 seconds off the pace.
 
Anna Goodman will be the only Canadian representative in the second run in 26th, 2.95 seconds behind.
