PANORAMA, B.C. — U.S. alpine skiers produced two NorAm victories Tuesday and added two other podium results at Panorama resort. Jeremy Transue scored his second NorAm win in a week while defending NorAm overall and super G champ Leanne Smith won a women's super G.
The Panorama NorAm stop wraps today today (Wednesday) with a super G and super combined event for women. The next men's NorAm races are Jan. 3-6 at Sunday River, Maine, with two alaloms and two giant slaloms. The next women's NorAms are Jan. 3-6 at Mont Ste. Anne, north of Quebec City, with two SLs and two giant slaloms.
The NorAms are vital steppingstones to the World Cup. The top two skiers in each discipline (slalom, GS, super G and downhill) receive automatic World Cup starts the next season.
Transue, who captured a NorAm downhill last week at Lake Louise but was 15th Monday in a SG, won the second men's super G with a time of 1 minute, 09.18 seconds. Jeffrey Frisch of Canada was second with a 1:09.68 time and Kevin Francis, Monday's SG winner, finished third.
"Pretty good day on both sides, the guys and the ladies," said men's coach Tim LaMarche. "Francis started early and was in the lead for a while and then [Canadian Jeff] Frisch came down and took the lead. And then 'Worm' [Transue], who was at the back of the top guys [skiing 25th], came down and smoked 'em. He was attacking, top to bottom, full-on attacking.
"It's good to see Jeffrey back in the hunt after his knee surgery last spring, and it certainly was good to see Worm, who wasn't happy with his run yesterday, and Francis turn it up," LaMarche said.
He also was enthused by the performances of the U.S. juniors "who have been skiing well up here. Tommy Ford [18; Bend, OR] had a top-10, but the story off the day may have been Colby Granstrom starting back in 64th and coming down 13th. That was some serious, nice skiing." Monday, Max Hammer won the super combined and was fifth in the first super G while Andrew Phillips tied for third in the super combi.
Later, in the women's super G, Smith won in 1:10.73 with Canadian Larisa Yurkiw second (1:11.11). Laurenne Ross, who broke her pelvis at Panorama a year ago, was fourth and Chelsea Marshall finished fifth.
"Leanne just continues to impress. She did a great job," women's coach John Hale said. "She got after it [attacked] so well. And this was where Laurenne was injured last year, so it was good to see her come [from No. 28 start] and get it done. She should be more confident tomorrow" when the women run a second super G and combined that with one run of slalom to form a super combined.
The next men's NorAm races are Jan. 3-6 at Sunday River, Maine, with two alaloms and two giant slaloms. After Wednesday's events, the next women's NorAms are Jan. 3-6 at Mont Ste. Anne, north of Quebec City, with two SLs and two giant slaloms.
