After back-to-back giant slalom races in Cardrona, New Zealand, ski racing action continued with slalom on August 1-2.

In the first women’s race, Storm Klomhaus, a University of Denver Pioneer, took the win by 0.47 seconds. Piera Hudson from New Zealand skied to second place with combined time of 1:27.74. American Madeleine Dekko, who will be racing for Williams College next season, rounded out the podium, 3.53 seconds off the winning pace. On the men’s side, Richard Leitgeb of Austria skied to a decisive victory, 1.31 seconds ahead of the field. Canadians took the next two spots. Joseph Young earned second place with a total time of 1:21.35 while Cooper Yates skied to third place, 0.6 seconds off of Young’s time.

On day two of ladies’ competition, Canada’s Amelia Smart–the 2017 NorAm GS title winner–bested Klomhaus to take the win with a total time of 1:30.62. The DU Pioneer was 0.77 seconds away from the victory. Hudson found herself on the podium yet again, coming in third place with a combined time of 1:32.29. In the men’s competition, American NCAA athletes swept the podium. Bates College athlete Tagert Mueller took the win by 1.79 seconds. He was chased by Kalle Wagner, an incoming freshman at Dartmouth College, who took second place with a total time of 1:24.09. Devon Cardamone of Middlebury College skied to third place, 2.08 seconds off the winning pace.
