NCAA: Dartmouth cruises to home carnival win

Dartmouth returned to its winning ways Saturday and won its third carnival of the season, this time on home snow.

    Dartmouth finished the weekend with 725 points. Middlebury finished second with 697 points, and Vermont finished third with 664 points.  
    Big Green skiers dominated the distance classical races at Oak Hill on Saturday, winning both the men’s 20 kilometer and women’s 15 kilometer events. First-year teammates Ida Sargent and Rosie Brennan of Dartmouth took the first two places, while Middlebury’s Alexa Turzian edged three consecutive Dartmouth skiers for third place.  
    Dartmouth’s impressive performance was good enough for a comfortable win in the team scoring over New Hampshire and Middlebury.
    The men’s 20-kilometer event was won easily by Bogner points leader Juergen Uhl of Vermont, who took a nearly 30-second lead on the second and last lap of the race.  Middlebury’s Simeon Hamilton edged Dartmouth’s Patrick O’Brien in a near photo finish for second place.  
    The Big Green’s Glenn Randall and Dakota Blackhorse-Von Jess finished fourth and 11th, and helped Dartmouth secure the team victory. Colby men skied to an impressive second place, thanks to seventh through ninth place finishes by Nick Kline, Wyatt Fereday, and Silas Gill.
    At the Dartmouth Skiway the home team continued to shine. Friday’s giant slalom winner Courtney Hammond notched another win Saturday in the slalom event. Vermont’s Jilyne McDonald finished second, followed by Hayley Jones of Dartmouth.
    Aided by Michelanne Shields who finished 10th, Dartmouth was able to edge Vermont by a narrow two-point margin in team scoring. New Hampshire finished third, thanks in part to a fourth-place finish by Bogner points leader Veronique Archambault-Leger.
    Charles Christianson of Williams earned his second slalom win of the season Saturday, ahead of Middlebury’s Andrew Wagner and Colby’s Vincent Lebrun-Fortin.  
    In team scoring, Middlebury men just edged Vermont by one point to take the win.  Colby College finished third, with host Dartmouth settling for fifth.
    Racing continues Feb. 15-16 when Williams College hosts its annual carnival at Prospect Mountain nordic center and Jiminy Peak.
