Meillard earns second gold medal at Junior Worlds

It was a tough race for the 131 athletes that competed in the men’s Junior World Championship giant slalom. Forty seven athletes did not finish the race, but the top athletes still managed to put on a good show, ending with a second gold medal for Loic Meillard of Switzerland.

Meillard already had one gold medal from the men’s alpine combined, and he showed off his skills in the giant slalom as well, keeping his lead all the way to the end of the second run, pushing ahead of Norway’s Timon Haugan by 57 hundredths of a second.

“It’s very cool,” said Meillard. “I really wanted to win the giant slalom. It was my main goal in these championships and to get it feels great.”

Haugan was part of a strong Norwegian contingent that put four athletes in the top 15.

“To see the others do so well just gives me such a boost, and that goes not just for my teammates, but for all my friends in other teams as well,” said Haugan.

Victor Guillot of France rounded out the podium, earning a bronze medal and his first medal of the series. Canadian athlete James Crawford was just off the podium in fourth place, 1.03 seconds away from the win.

Erik Arvidsson was the top American, coming in 10th place. River Radamus, Andrew Miller and Garrett Driller finished outside the top 30 in 33rd, 34th and 37th, respectively. Jett Seymour and George Steffey did not finish the second run.
