BIG SKY, Montana — Be careful what you wish for …
Cooler weather did indeed move in Wednesday at masters nationals as temperatures dipped into the teens at night and all that soft mushy “hero” snow turned into bulletproof conditions. One Western racer was overheard saying, “It never occurred to me that I would need to sharpen my super G skis.”
The men’s A/B super G took place on Wednesday under perfect speed conditions. Many racers commented on how well the course was set, that it had everything from technical to high speeds.
Central division’s Steve Lindemer (M3) was fastest overall, winning the run with what most called a “perfect” run. Erik Klemme (M5-RM), racing with a sore knee and a broken hand, was just off Lindermer, with Richard Bradsby (RM) in Class 3 rounding out the overall podium. Tim Hill (M4-PN) held off a charging Franz Fuchsberger by only 0.01 of a second.
In giant slalom action, two very well-set courses hosted 54 women on the Hangman’s trail. Lisa Densmore (W5-EA) won the first run, but Dana Leach (W2-IM) charged back to take her class and second overall. In true Lindemer fashion, Heidi (W3-CN) stole the second run and the race, winning the celebratory pink tutu. Densmore said, “I’m just happy to hang in there with the younger women.” Fourth overall was Central’s Sherrie Glas (W4) and rounding out the overall podium was Rocky Mountain’s Victoria Valar (W5).
In Divisions Cup action, Rocky Mountain took the lead and the case of “adult beverage” just ahead of the Eastern division, moving Far West back to third.
Action continues on Thursday for the women’s final event, a slalom on Tippy’s Run on what should be great slalom conditions — firm and consistent. The men’s Class A also race slalom on Tippy’s. The class D men race giant slalom and the class B men have the day off.
