Mangan and Radamus Named Ski Racing Media Juniors of the Year
Starting in 1975, the editorial board of Ski Racing has come together each spring to choose one male and one female athlete deserving to hold the title of Ski Racing Media Junior of the Year.
Over the past 43 years, Ski Racing’s picks have gone on to earn 210 World Cup wins, 38 World Championship medals, and 16 Olympic medals. Past winners include 2018 Overall Women’s World Cup champion Mikaela Shiffrin, Lindsey Vonn, Ted Ligety, Julia Mancuso, Tamara McKinney, and Steve Mahre, among many others.
The athletes chosen by Ski Racing truly embody the spirit of the award and have not only achieved impressive success on the slopes this season, but have inspired countless racers across the country with their professional attitudes off of them.
The 2017 recipients of the Ski Racing Junior of the Year award are Patricia Mangan and River Radamus.
PATRICIA MANGAN
This year’s female winner hails from the Holimont Racing Club in New York. This season, Patricia Mangan scored her first World Cup points at the alpine combined in Lenzerheide, Switzerland, and ended the season ranked 10th in the Longines Rising Star Cup standings. She also made her Olympic debut in the giant slalom at PyeongChang. Last summer, the U.S. Ski Team athlete ran a weeklong summer overnight camp for NYSSRA skiers while also helping her brother Andrew recover after suffering a severe spinal fracture. Her success on the hill and hard work off the slope make her the perfect recipient of the 2018 Ski Racing Media Junior of the Year award.
RIVER RADAMUS
Apart from also having one of the coolest names in all of ski racing, River Radamus earned his stripes on the NorAm circuit this season by way of finishing runner-up in the slalom standings and narrowly walking away with the overall title, giving him World Cup starting rights in every race next season. Additionally, at the 2018 World Junior Ski Championships in Davos, Switzerland, Radamus took home a silver medal in the super-G and shared the podium with his American teammate Luke Winters in third. Add his first two World Cup starts to the mix in Beaver Creek and Adelboden, Switzerland, and we certainly haven’t seen the last of this Vail, Colo., native.
