Banff’s Huston Philp, younger brother of Canadian World Cup skier, Olympian, and University of Denver Pioneer Trevor Philp, was just eighth in the second run, but his fist run margin was enough to grant him the to win the U.S. U18 National Championship giant slalom Tuesday (March 4) at Copper Mountain, Colo.

Waterville Valley’s Peter Fuigna was a bit more consistent, finishing second in both runs to claim second overall. James Ferri, from Killington Mountain School, was third. Scotty Lebel, the downhill runner-up, posted fourth as the third-fastest American on the day.

Just one day after winning the super G title, Stephanie Lebby added the GS championship to her collection on behalf of USSA’s TEAM Academy. Nina O’Brien, of Burke Mountain Academy, won the silver medal and Erika McCormick of Ski Club Vail earned bronze.

With the whole schedule having been consolidated by lost days at the front of the program, the championships continue to feature two races each day, one for men and one for women. With the single-run races now out of the way, the decision was made to complete one race before starting the next. The Copper race hill is wide enough to accommodate side-by-side courses.

The day started out with bright sunshine and a hard surface. “It’s not rock hard because we had a little snow a couple days ago, but there was hard packed power,” said USSA development coordinator Lester Keller.

While some of the early race winners could be anticipated, Keller has been pleased with the general outcome.

“We’ve got some parity going on. The East got a first and second and Rocky/Central had five guys in the top 10. That’s excellent from my perspective. The regions are more competitive,” noted Keller. “It’s pretty nice to confirm what we thought we knew,” he added. “There is a lot of (regional) team pride rising around here and it’s really cool. We’re on to something here.”

About the Author: Hank McKee

In memoriam: The veteran of the staff, McKee started with Ski Racing in 1980. Over the seasons, he covered virtually every aspect of the sport, from the pro tours to junior racing, freestyle and World Cup alpine competition. He wrote the first national stories for many U.S. team stars, and was still around to report on their retirements. “Longevity has its rewards,” he said, “but it’s a slow process.”
