Three late bibs put in charges in the FIS Junior World Ski Championship super G Tuesday (March 6) knocking Abby Ghent off the podium and down to sixth place.

Norwegian Annie Winquist, wearing bib 45 charged past early Swiss leader Joana Haehlen to take the gold. Third went to 34th starting Ragnhild Mowinckel, also of Norway, for her second medal of the title meet

Swiss Corinne Suter was fourth and Austrian Rosina Schneeberger posted fifth from the 32nd start, all of them knocking Ghent down. In bib 11 she had led in the early going.

“I have goose bumps all over my body right now,” said Winquist in the finish. “I had not expected this at all. It’s a really big surprise for me, but the conditions were simply perfect. The hard surface fit me well and even though I thought it was a big flat at some parts, I had to work hard all the way. Ragnhild gave me a few tips after her run and everything simply came together when it was my turn.”

“We are really a strong team right now,” Mowinkcel added. “I’m super stoked right now. Conditions were great and I loved the course.”

Other US finishers Anna Marno placed 23rd, Lauren Samuels 25th, Jacqueline Wiles 32nd and Foreste Peterson 35th. Kathrine Ryan did not finish.

Canada had just one finisher, Tianda Carroll in 37th. Stephanie Marcil was DQ’d while Mikaela Tommy and Sarah Freeman were DNF’s.
