In late May, Fredrik Steinwall stepped down from his role as head coach of the Swedish men’s junior team, and veteran coach Magnus Larsson will take his place. Larsson has previous experience with the national team when he was a junior team coach from 2005 to 2010, and then took the plunge and became head coach of the national team from 2010 to 2012.

“It feels great to be back because it is really a dream job,” Larsson said. “It is the second turn around now, and I hope to build up a strong generation to take over in the future. I have a long experience of working with young people. It’s probably my strongest side.”

“This year, it’s hard to say what my hopes are, but it is mainly about getting the juniors to get to the European Cup as soon as possible,” said Larsson. “They not only perform in skiing, but in everything around with physical training, and then to take the step up to the next level. There is so much difference between World Cup and junior [racing] and the sooner one realizes that, they can set long-term goals as skiers.”

Because Larsson has experience as both a junior and World Cup coach, he brings that strength to the Swedish alpine organization and will contribute to continued competitive development of the younger athletes.

“It feels good that after Fredrik Steinwall’s good results, we have found a coach who already has previous experience as a Swedish junior and World Cup coach. I myself have not worked with him, but we look forward to having him in the organization,” said Heinzpeter Platter, head coach of the national team.

Platter reinforces the importance of having an experienced coach of the youth team.

“He’s seen what it takes to get on top, so that experience he can utilize and educate the younger skiers to go all the way,” he said. “I think we will be able to build a good foundation for the future.”
