EUROPEAN RACERS continued to dominate on Friday at Lake Louise in the final downhill training run while the Americans fell dramatically off the pace. Italy’s Elena Fanchini posted the day’s fastest time, 1 minute, 45.00 seconds, to edge past Switzerland’s Monika Dumermuth by 0.36. Austrian veteran Alexandra Meissnitzer was third.
Stacey Cook, who has been consistent in training all week, led the U. S. contingent, finishing 10th, 0.92 behind Fanchini. Julia Mancuso, who had finished one and four respectively in the earlier runs, faded to 13th, 1.10 off the pace.
Lindsey Vonn, coming of an injury, missed a gate near the bottom of the men’s Olympic course and was disqualified.
The team’s younger skiers — Chelsea Marshall, Kaylin Richardson, and Leanne Smith — failed to crack the top 30.
Saturday’s race starts at 12:30 p.m. MST. Live timing is available via the FIS site, and WCSN will air the race at 4:00 p.m.
