TREBLE CONE will host the Mapei Australia and New Zealand Cup this week, attracting top New Zealand and international talent, including reigning World Cup overall women’s champ Nicole Hosp of Austria.
More than 75 men and 40 women from 15 nations are slated to compete in slalom and giant slalom events Thursday and Friday.
The high level of talent will not only raise the level of competition, but assist the New Zealand competitors by providing a lower penalty. Athletes must have a maximum of 140 FIS points to be eligible to enter these races, which are run to strict Continental Cup standards.
“Such a talented international line up provides good training for the New Zealand national and development teams and New Zealand alpine ski racing academy athletes amongst a high profile international field. It also provides athletes with the opportunity to lower their FIS points and world ranking in the lead-up to the 2007-08 World Junior Championships, World Cup start ranking and national team criteria,” said Guenther Birgmann, the director of the Treble Cone Snow Sports and Race Department.
In addition to Hosp, others scheduled to compete include Norwegian national team members Lars Myhrer, Truls Ove Karlsen and four-time World Cup podium finisher Bjarne Solbakken; Kilian Albrecht of Bulgaria and U.S. racers Roger Brown and Warner Nickerson.
