2016 Overall World Cup Winner Lara Gut held her first press conference in six months on Tuesday to talk about her comeback from injury and her plans to return to the World Cup. The Swiss skier announced that she will skip the Soelden World Cup opener and all the fanfare associated with it in favor of training.

“Usually, I’m already skiing in July,” she explained. “This year, I started in September, so I thought that, since the beginning, I want to come back strong, not fast.”

Instead, she intends to make her return at Killington, Vt. in late November. This will give her the months of October and November to train all her disciplines including super-G and downhill.

This is part of her new approach to her ski career, which she has thanks to her knee. Gut said she plans to take breaks and time for herself and realizes she can’t go 100 percent all of the time.

“This winter, I’m going to take breaks,” she said. “I’m going to take more time for myself, but not because of my knee. It’s just thanks to my knee. My knee taught me that I have to pay attention to myself because it’s like my body allows me to go skiing, to do crazy things, but you also want something back. I’m going to race. I’m going to do crazy things, and to thank my body that I can do that, I’m going to have to sleep 10 hours. I will have to eat healthy.”

The Swiss skier said she is feeling strong on her skis and is having no issues with her knee.
