Two-time downhill crystal globe winner, Peter Fill, took to the microphone during a press conference Saturday after the Kitzbuehel downhill, to announce that Garmisch will be the last set of races he will ski in his career.

At 37, Fill has had a full World Cup career, amassing three total World Cup wins, two World Championship medals, three crystal globes, and 22 podiums. In 2018, at age 36, Fill decided to end his season early after dealing with the lingering pain of a back hematoma that occurred during a crash in Beaver Creek. Originally, Fill had been aiming to make it through another season, ending his career at the 2021 World Championships in Cortina. Over the summer, he had been working hard to find a solution to his back pain but realized at his age that his career would have to come to a close after the 2019/20 season.

Coming into Kitzbuehel, the Italian had hoped he would qualify for World Finals in Cortina, but as of Saturday morning realized that would not be possible given his results so far this season.

“I had my sights set on 2021 in Cortina, but as it turns out my body just can’t do it anymore,” said Fill during the Kitzbuehel press conference.
