Despite a broken hand, Italy’s Denise Karbon edged overall leader Nicole Hosp to win her fifth of six giant slalom World Cup races this season.
Hosp had control of the first run in Ofterschwang, Germany, but Karbon stuck it out to beat the Austrian by eight hundredths of a second with a time of two minutes, 22.26. Elisabeth Goergl came in third only 0.09 behind Karbon. The top U.S. finisher was Lindsey Vonn, who came in sixth with a time of 2:22.84.
Karbon won the first four giant slalom races this season but was ninth after the first leg — 1.09 seconds behind Hosp — as she tried to cope with a broken bone in her left thumb.

"Lindsey won the bottom split and did a great job on that final run," coach Chris Knight said. "She's been working it out. GS was her weakest event but she's been making steady progress. She stands in a little better position on her skis and gets more power out of [her stance] now."
Karbon won the first four giant slalom races this season but was ninth after the first leg — 1.09 seconds behind Hosp — as she tried to cope with a broken bone in her left thumb.
"I was afraid of the pain, especially pushing off with it. It's still pretty strange but hopefully I won't lose too many points,'' said Karbon, who was wearing a protective glove on her left hand after sustaining the injury in training on Wednesday.
Julia Mancuso of the United States was seventh after the first run, but then dropped to 11th overall.
"I don't really know where I lost the time up top. But I would have liked to have been closer after the first run,'' said Mancuso, who is still looking for her first World Cup victory this season.
"Jules had a couple of mistakes on the top. Her timing was a little off and she was a little late with her pressure just missed qualifying for a second run, finishing 32nd in the morning. "She's been so close so many times. She can ski at this level but maybe she shows a little too much respect for the hill," the coach said. "If she'd trust herself, she could be breaking into the top 30 regularly."
