Swiss slalom skier, Daniel Yule, announced via Instagram on Monday that he will be donating half of his winnings from the final two World Cup slalom races in Kranjska Gora, Slovenia, and Soldeu, Andorra, to Protect Our Winters Switzerland, a nonprofit organization dedicated to climate advocacy in the winter sports community.

The announcement comes on the heels of controversial comments made by FIS President, Gian Franco Kasper, who expressed his skepticism of climate change and how he prefers to do business with oppressive governments.

“Putting my money where my mouth is!” Yule wrote. “After the FIS president denied climate change during the last World Championships, I’ve decided to donate half of the prize money I earn at the last two World Cup races in Kranjska Gora and Andorra to Protect Our Winters Switzerland.”

Kasper’s comments, in which he said that there was “no proof” of climate change, angered many in the snowsports community, especially given Kasper’s position as the head of the organization that oversees many of the top winter sports in the world. Kasper issued an apology later that same week and insisted that his words “were not meant to be taken literally.”

The men race this weekend in Kranjska Gora with the slalom taking place on Sunday, March 10.
