Cookie’s Corner: Welcome to my online journalWelcome to a season that is sure to be the best for the U.S. Ski Team since I have been around. Well, that won’t be too hard to do since it is my first year as a World Cup athlete! That’s part of the reason why Ski Racing has invited me to start posting this column at their website, and give everyone out there a fresh view of what it is like to be a World Cup skier.

I am very excited about this opportunity, and I feel you should be too. This is a unique chance to see through the eyes of someone fulfilling a dream that almost all junior racers have had at some point. Being so new too, I know what it is like to be a struggling junior racer on the edge of making the U.S. team, and I will be able to share stories or give you some pointers about what it is like or what to expect because I have recently been there. And if I am extremely lucky, I will get the chance to help one of you be a better racer and skier in general, and maybe help you start fulfilling your dream.

To introduce myself, my name is Stacey J. Cook. I am 20 years old, the same age as Julia Mancuso, Lindsey Kildow, and Kaylin Richardson – three very talented skiers and stars in the eyes of many junior and master racers in the United States. I may be the same age, but you probably have not heard my name because I am relatively new to the USST family. This is my second year on the team. Last year I was on the C team and raced in the NorAm and Europa Cup circuits, and this year I am on the B team and looking to buy myself a full-time slot in the World Cup circuit.

Let’s see, what else can I tell you about me. I live in Truckee, California, (yes, the same place Daron lives) and I am very proud to be a Californian. You could probably picture a typical California girl and come up with me. I love the sun and warm weather (not too hot though, there needs to be that ocean breeze). In the summer, you will have a hard time getting me out of the water, weather it is the ocean or the beautiful Lake Tahoe. I wear shorts in the middle of winter, just because I love them. I graduated from a public high school in Truckee (go Wolverines!). And I have a dog named Alli, and I do not have a boy friend. How was that for an introduction!

Something else I am very excited about is that I am going to give you all a chance to ask me some questions this year. The boundaries are limitless; ask about whatever you would like to know about skiing, traveling in Europe, technique, about life in Truckee, or even about my dog. Just keep it clean. I will try to answer a couple of questions every time I write a new article. You could also throw in there some ideas about what you would like to see in my articles.

So send me your questions, keep plugging away at your dryland exercises, and picture yourself skiing down the cornice at Mammoth, with no on else around on either the perfect wind-packed snow, or three feet of the fluffiest white stuff you can imagine. Well you don’t have to do the last part, but don’t worry, I am probably doing enough of that for the whole world.

I will be back with you soon,

Stacey
