Initial assessment: Scrape and brush factory wax, clean with wax remover, check base for fl atness with truebar, check base and side bevels, check sidewall for trouble spots.

Sidewall and top sheets: On traditional, sandwich- constructed skis, fi le the tip and tails back with a cross cut file or panzer; 15 to 20 degrees is fine. Make sureyou remove the sidewall all the way down to the edge, smooth the transition into the top sheet and gently roll the top sheet along the whole ski. On all skis, use a sidewall planer to remove material above the edge: sandpaper can be used to smooth out any rough spots. The goal is to expose enough of the edge to set the side-edge bevel
and make in-season sharpening easier.
