The last Australia New Zealand Cup tech races of the year kicked off on Monday with a pair of giant slalom races at Coronet Peak, New Zealand. The fields were considerably deeper than the ones found in last week’s series in Australia, featuring several veteran World Cup racers, and competition was fierce as discipline titles and all-important FIS point results were on the line for both the men and women.

In the women’s race on Monday, Norwegian World Cup regular Ragnhild Mowinckel took the convincing victory on her new Head skis with a total time of 1:49.02 seconds, an impressive 1.39 seconds ahead of Austria’s Katharina Truppe in second. Truppe’s compatriot Bernadette Schild (who also switched equipment sponsors from Rossignol to Head in the offseason) rounded out the podium in third, 1.46 seconds off of Mowinckel’s pace. Top American honors went to Dartmouth College’s Stephanie Lebby in seventh place.

In the second race, Schild managed to find her groove and take the win with a time of 2:02.02 seconds, besting Mowinckel by 0.33 seconds and forcing the Attacking Viking to settle for second. The reigning World Junior super-G champion, Nina Ortlieb of Austria, snuck in for a third-place finish, 1.46 seconds behind her teammate. The U.S. Ski Team’s Nellie Rose Talbot was the top American finisher in sixth place.

On the men’s side, race one saw the podium separated by only 0.01 seconds as the U.S. Ski Team’s Tim Jitloff and Austria’s Marcel Mathis, a former national team member who now trains with Global Racing, ended up in a rare tie for the win with a time of 1:47.71 seconds. Finishing in third by only 0.01 seconds was Slovakia’s Adam Zampa. The race was Jitloff’s first competitive appearance since making the switch to little known ski manufacturer Croc in the offseason. If this result is any indication of how Jitloff is getting along with the new equipment, good things may be on the horizon. Americans David Chodounsky and Ryan Cochran-Siegle managed to finish in fifth and sixth place, respectively.

The second men’s race saw Austrian rising star Manuel Feller take the win with a time of 1:57.74 seconds. Chodounsky improved on his previous performance and landed in the runner-up spot, only 0.18 seconds back, for his second scoring GS result in as many days. Zampa once again found himself in third place, 0.25 seconds off the pace.

At the end of the two days of racing, Germany’s Julia Mutschlechner took home the season title amassing 247 points, 31 points ahead of Australia’s Greta Small in second. For the men, Zampa’s younger brother, Andreas, took the season title with 250 points, just 10 points ahead of a surging Mathis when all was said and done. Willis Feasey of New Zealand, in third, was the top-ranked continental skier in the GS series with 216 points.
