Alpine nationals: Mancuso leads halfway through GS
Julia Mancuso moved into position for the ninth national title of her career Monday, taking the lead after the first run of the women’s giant slalom at the Nature Valley U.S. Alpine Championships.
Mancuso, who already captured the super G crown earlier at nationals, timed 1 minute, 6.24 seconds on a tricky course set by U.S. coach John Hale. Jessica Kelley stands in second place, a tenth-of-a-second back, and reigning U.S. GS champ Caitlin Ciccone is in third place with a time of 1:06.42. Sunday’s slalom champ, Resi Stiegler, and junior racer Megan McJames rounded out the top five after one run.

Mancuso, who already captured the super G crown earlier at nationals, timed 1 minute, 6.24 seconds on a tricky course set by U.S. coach John Hale. The slope features a number of tight sections, and Mancuso was overheard saying she had trouble finding a rhythm to her turns during the first run.
Jessica Kelley stands in second place, a tenth-of-a-second back, and reigning U.S. GS champ Caitlin Ciccone is in third place with a time of 1:06.42. Sunday’s slalom champ, Resi Stiegler, and junior racer Megan McJames rounded out the top five after one run.
The second run is scheduled for 2 p.m. local time.
