Odermatt Sets WJC Record, Lie Takes Women’s Super-G

By Published On: February 4th, 2018Comments Off on Odermatt Sets WJC Record, Lie Takes Women’s Super-G

Switzerland’s Marco Odermatt has yet to be beat at this year’s World Junior Championships in Davos, Switzerland. The young Swiss took the win in Sunday’s alpine combined and added to his victories in downhill, super-G, and team event for a record four gold medals at one Championships, surpassing the previous mark of three set by his countryman and current World Cup downhill leader Beat Feuz in 2007.

Odermatt won the combined ahead of teammate Semyel Bissig in second and Austria’s Raphael Haaser in third. the top American finisher on the day was super-G silver medalist River Radamus in eighth, followed by Luke Winters in 22nd and George Steffey in 30th. Andew Miller, Kyle Negomir, and Jimmy Krupka did not finish.

“I managed a very good slalom run and a perfect super-G run,” Odermatt said. “I have not been on the slalom skis for a long time and therefore never counted on winning in the alpine combined. I’m in a flow and will try to maintain it as long as possible.”

In the women’s super-G, Norway’s Kajsa Vikhoff Lie took the win by only 0.05 seconds ahead of Austria’s Franziska Gritsch in second and 0.63 seconds ahead of Switzerland’s Stephanie Jenal in third. The U.S. Ski Team’s Patricia Mangan narrowly missed the podium in fourth, 0.74 seconds off the pace.

Nina O’Brien was the next-best American in 16th. The rest of the American contingent of Abigail Murer, Isabella Wright, Keely Cashman, and AJ Hurt did not finish.

With seven of eleven medal events already completed, host nation Switzerland is currently leading the medal standings with eight total medals (four gold, one silver, and three bronze) ahead of Austria with six (one gold, three silver, and two bronze) and Norway with two (one gold, and one silver).

Racing continues in Davos on Monday, Feb. 5, with women’s alpine combined.
