Goldberg, Mayer Claim Copper Warm-Up Downhills

Thursday marked the beginning of the North American speed season as the U.S. Ski & Snowboard Speed Center in Copper Mountain, Colo., played host to a pair of men’s downhill races. With many of the world’s best speed skiers in town to prepare for the opening World Cup speed races in Lake Louise, Canada, scheduled for next week, the field was stacked with racers from 12 different countries making the start.

With an early training run and two race runs all on the schedule before lunch, the program was tight as racing got underway. American Downhiller Jared Goldberg took the opening race with a time of 1:32.03 seconds, 0.17 seconds ahead of Italian veteran Christof Innerhofer in second and 0.40 seconds ahead of Austria’s Matthias Mayer in third. Canada’s Jeffery Read was the fastest junior in 27th, 2.47 seconds off of Goldberg’s pace.

“It was a good run,” reflected Goldberg. “We’ve been getting some miles in on the hill the last few days full-length, and every run I’ve been feeling better and better. It definitely feels good to ski fast against these guys. We’ve been training with them since we got here so it’s been pretty cool to have that pace.”

Race number two saw Mayer turn things up a notch, clocking in the fastest time of 1:32.17 seconds. Mayer was joined on the podium by Germany’s Thomas Dressen and Mayer’s Austrian teammate Vincent Kriechmayr, 0.12 and 0.25 seconds back in second and third, respectively. Thomas Biesemeyer was the top American, just off the podium in fourth, and Canada’s Sam Mulligan was the top junior in 22nd, 2.39 seconds back.

“It was a great training today,” Mayer said of his morning. “So many good skiers here at these FIS races, and it’s perfect preparations for us. It’s my first downhill training since six weeks, and the training was very tough for me; it was so fast and very bumpy but after my second race it was really great. I felt in good shape.”

Reigning World Junior downhill champion Sam Morse of the U.S. also had a solid day, finishing in 17th and 21st places in the two races as he looks towards another successful season.

“This morning was pretty interesting,” said Morse. “I got flagged at the beginning. So I got kind of an extra run so I was a little more fatigued but I managed to lay down a good, fast run. Second race today was a little slower. I was a lot cleaner with my line but I think I gave it a little too much respect.”
