Kowalczyk, Teichmann claim second stage of Tour de Ski

Justyna Kowalczyk added her second stage win at Oberhof Friday (Dec. 30) in a hard fought battle with Therese Johaug to produce a 5.2 second margin with seven stages remaining in the Tour de Ski.

Men’s winner Axel Teichmann, now living in Oberhof, overcame Petter Northug to spot a 7.3second margin in the Tour standings.

Temperatures hovering around freezing made waxing difficult for the 10 and 15k pursuit races. “This was a really tough race,” said Kowalczyk after sweeping the Oberhof races for the second straight year.  “The snow was really difficult, the skis didn’t work perfect, but I am really satisfied that I’m number one in the second stage.”

She did not, however, feel confident about staying ahead of the Norwegian duo of Johaug and Marit Bjoergen. “Johaug can be really strong throughout the Tour. Her best race is definitely up the Alpe Cermis, where I will need at least a two minute gap if I want to beat her. We still have seven stages left, so we will see.”

American Kikkan Randall finished sixth on the day and held sixth in the Tour standings as well, 1:13.6 behind Kowalczyk.

Teichmann said he had a good feeling throughout the race. “We did a lot of training on double poling this summer and even though I thought Petter would come closer to me before the finish, I was able to keep the lead.”

Northug said he had escaped a fall and was happy to have put some good points up next to his name. “I was on the back of Matti Heikkinen and saw him fall right in front of me. I had to go out in the snow, but I think I was lucky I didn’t fall. … I didn’t do well in Oberstdorf last year. I am satisfied.”

Kris Freeman was the top US finisher in the mens race, in 30th. Canadian Devon Kershaw was 15th. — Nancy Merrill

Over the seasons, he covered virtually every aspect of the sport, from the pro tours to junior racing, freestyle and World Cup alpine competition.
