Kristoffersen wins 5th World Juniors title on home snow

HAFJELL, Norway – Shooting star Henrik Kristoffersen raced to victory in the men’s giant slalom at the World Junior Championships ahead of Swiss Loic Meillard (+0.96) and his teammate Marcus Monsen (+1.16).

Many fans, friends, and family traveled to the ski resort close to Lillehammer to support the 20-year-old. Just a few hours earlier, his teammate Kjetil Jansrud took World Cup victory in the men’s super G in nearby Kvitfjell giving the Norwegian hosts reason to celebrate.

Kristoffersen now equals the record of Austrian Benjamin Raich for the most Junior World Championship victories as both racers achieved an impressive five wins in the men’s category.

“It feels really good to win on home soil. I’ve got lots of friends and family here which I am not so used to. I am super happy to be tied with Raich now. I’ve got another chance to medal tomorrow in slalom, but it’s going to be tough.”

Meanwhile, second place finisher Meillard already scored a first, a second, and a third place at the Europa Cup level this season. His silver medal in Hafjell seems to come as a logical sequence in his strong performances. Bronze medalist Monsen claimed his third Junior World Championship medal after silver in GS and bronze in the combined event last year in Jasna.

Although Daniele Sorio who sat in third after the first run landed in fourth place in the end, it was a strong showing for the Italian team with four racers in the top 10.

One of the prominent figures on-site in Hafjell was Lillehammer 1994 double Olympic Champion Markus Wasmeier of Germany who cheered on his son Lukas, who unfortunately did not finish the race.

“It’s nice to be back here where I got so many great memories,” Wasmeier said.

The U.S. Ski Team’s AJ Ginnis was the top American on the day, finishing 18th while just barely being bested by his former Green Mountain Valley School teammate Charlie Raposo, of Great Britain, who now skis with Global Racing. Alpine Ontario’s Patrick McConville was the fastest Canadian in 22nd.
