Jansrud Clinches Super-G Title With Kvitfjell Win
With one World Cup super-G race left on the 2018 calendar, Norwegian Attacking Viking Kjetil Jansrud clinched his third career super-G globe on Sunday after winning his hometown race in Kvitfjell, Norway, ahead of Swiss rival Beat Feuz in second and France’s Brice Roger in third. With Sunday’s victory, Jansrud has now won seven World Cup speed races in Kvitfjell, five of them in super-G.
“It feels amazing,” he shared after the race. “It’s been a few times and you never expect it to happen again but then it does. It’s an amazing day building on a pretty insane track record in super-G so I’m very happy.”
The Attacking vikings have also won every overall super-G globe since 2012, with Jansrud, Aksel Lund Svindal, and Aleksander Aamodt Kilde sharing the seven titles.
“It has been the Norwegian discipline for quite a while now and I’m not sure why,” Jansrud admitted. “If I knew then it would be six or seven Norwegian guys on top and it isn’t, but somehow we keep on fighting hard and end up on top and it’s every time a proud moment for us.”
This season in particular has been an interesting one in super-G as four different men have taken home victories with Jansrud being the only repeat winner so far as he also won the opening race in Lake Louise, Canada, last November.
“It makes for a tighter cup when you have different winners,” he added. “I thought for me the biggest challenge was not making points in Val Gardena, which is normally one of my strongest hills. I got a feeling that it was going to be tough there.”
Switzerland’s Feuz has been on the podium seven times this season, but Sunday’s runner-up finish was only his second of the year in super-G. Feuz has also finished either first or second on each of his World Cup podiums this season. The Swiss was also the Olympic bronze medalist in super-G last month.
“Until the Olympics it wasn’t working so well for me in super-G, but now I found a way to be more relaxed on my skis and can do well also in that discipline,” Feuz said. “The confidence from the Olympic medal and the fact that I really like this hill also helped.”
The surprise of the day came from France’s Brice Roger who charged from the 49th start position to match his career-best World Cup finish in third, 0.33 seconds behind Jansrud.
“Super-G has been really hard for me this season,” said Roger. “I found my pace in downhill but was struggling a lot in super-G. I had nothing to lose and this morning I chose to change something in my setup and it worked. Before the race, I was looking at the standings and I needed a top five to have a chance to go to Finals. I thought I had no chance and now I get a bonus race to conclude the season. I’m super happy.”
The Americans were led by Jared Goldberg in 16th place and was the only American to find the points on Sunday. Bryce Bennett and Andrew Weibrecht finished in 37th and 38th place, respectively, with Ryan Cochran-Siegle in 39th and Wiley Maple in 48th.
The top 25 ranked men from each discipline now head to Are, Sweden, for World Cup finals March 14-18.
