Domestic competition roundup for January 4, 2005Kaylin Richardson claimed two golds in a row this week in NorAm’s at Mont Ste Anne, Quebec. “I was happy about yesterday’s win because the snow was so hard and the odds could have gone in anyone’s direction,” said the Minnesota native. “Today, I really feel like I had two solid runs and confirmed the extent at which my holiday training paid off.”

It was a testament to the course workers and organizers and to the visiting team as the U.S. women fought through wind, rain and rock hard conditions to all but sweep the CIBC Coupe Nor-Am slalom at Mont Ste Anne, Quebec Jan. 2.

Richardson got the win in the first of a four-race series while her U.S. teammates swept all but one of the top 12 places. The one they missed was Brigitte Acton in second place.

“The snow was so hard that it made the conditions even for all the girls skiing in the top 30,” said Acton. “I had some strong training sessions during the holidays and now, my confidence is particularly strong,” she added.

Among the top performances from the back of the pack were Jamie Kingsbury picking sixth from the 25th start, and Courtney Hammond 11th in the 37th bib, Lindsay Cone (born in 1988!), 12th from the 38th bib and Chirine Njeim 14th in the 63rd bib.

The Canadians pushed a few more skiers into the upper ranks on the second day’s slalom, but it was still Richardson with the win, and a potent one at that with a 1.21 second margin over Lauren Ross. Acton got third.

Down south, in Maine…

The guys were running NorAm GS at Sunday River with the Northern tribes collecting the bulk of the hardware and points. Patrick Biggs, from the 23rd start, got the win over Ryan Semple leaving the lone U.S. podium slot for Jesse Marshall in third.
