HAFJELL, Norway – Austrians Nina Ortlieb and Stephanie Brunner claimed gold and silver in the opening competition of the FIS Alpine Junior World Ski Championships at Hafjell, the women’s giant slalom, but the Canadian team had much to cheer about as well with bronze going to Valerie Grenier in a tight race.

It was Ortlieb’s first big international victory. After tearing a ligament last February, she did not expect to find success on this stage.

“This is such a great moment in my career. I am super happy, especially after so many ups and downs in the past year. I would have thought that super G is my best event but today’s result is hard to beat!” exclaimed the daughter of former ski racer Patrick Ortlieb, 1992 Olympic gold medalist and 1996 downhill world champion.

11038485_975986482413106_3360018975892682052_nIt was an exciting giant slalom in Hafjell especially with the racers from Canada showing such a strong team performance. After the first run, Mikaela Tommy sat in first place but couldn’t carry her momentum to the second run. She landed in fourth position in the final rankings, with her teammate Candace Crawford finishing in fifth.

“I’m very happy for the entire Canadian Team. It was such a great performance,” Grenier said after the race. “My first run this morning was pretty good already. In my second I run, I wanted to go for a tough fight for the podium and it went so well. I took bronze!”

Landing in sixth position with bib 30 (third after the first run), Mina Fuerst Holtmann scored the best result for the host nation.

One of the  day’s favorites, defending Junior World Champion Marta Bassino of Italy who has started in numerous World Cup events this season, skied out in the first run and did not finish the competition.

Paula Moltzan was the top American on the day, finishing 37th.
