The 2 Tinas top Garmisch downhill training run

GARMISCH-PARTENKIRCHEN, Germany – Lichtenstein’s Tina Weirather lead the way on Friday in the only training run ahead of Saturday’s downhill. Thursday’s training run was canceled due to snowfall and additional work needed to prepare the hill.

Weirather skied down the 2920-meter Kandahar course in 1:44.77 under sunny skies, 0.56 seconds faster than Slovenia’s Tina Maze. Austria’s Regina Sterz finished third, 0.76 seconds back.

Anna Fenninger, coming off of her double victory last week in Bansko, was fourth fastest, 1.10 seconds adrift.

Bavarian snow has already suited Weirather in her career, as she has three World Cup podium finishes from Garmisch-Partenkirchen.

“It has always gone pretty good for me here, and I am really looking forward to this weekend’s races,” said the 25-year-old. “It wasn’t that easy to ski today because the snow was still a little bit soft in some sections, but that won’t be the case tomorrow. It really looks good and we should have a great race,” she concluded.

Overall leader Maze started the season by winning three of the first nine World Cup races, but is now without a triumph since winning the Giant Slalom in Åre on Dec. 12. She took two second-place finishes in Bansko to keep her points total for the season ticking over and is seeking to top the podium again.

“It’s a fun to be back here,” said Maze. “With this great weather and knowing you don’t have to wait at the start like in Bansko is good for the energy. My goal is simply to win because Anna (Fenninger) is just skiing so well. I have to beat her. I will try to achieve this on race day.”

World Cup downhill leader Lindsey Vonn finished seventh, 1.18 seconds off the pace.

“I definitely feel like I’m in a good place now,” Vonn told reporters. “I made a lot of mistakes so I know I can definitely ski to win, if I avoid theses mistakes. I know it’s a good track for me and I have great memories so I’m a happy to be back here.”

There was tough news for Italian Daniela Merighetti who already suffered a broken jaw earlier in the season and who had to be helicoptered off the course following a crash close to the finish line. An initial diagnosis was reported by the Italian federation as a spiral fracture of the fibula which requires surgery, effectively ending Merighetti’s season.

The downhill is scheduled for Saturday at 10:45 CET.
