PARK CITY, Utah — Jake Zamansky powered to the win Thursday in a giant slalom at the NDS Invitational, edging fellow U.S. national team member Erik Schlopy and Wednesday’s GS winner, Kevin Francis.
Zamansky clocked a two-run combined time of 1 minute, 53.81 seconds. Schlopy crossed in the second place at 1:54.05, while Francis clocked 1:54.37 for third place.
"It was a fun race," said Zamansky, who also lives in Park City for training opportunities. "It's nice to be out here at home, in my own bed, with my family and friends here. The race crew did a great job prepping the hill, and it was a great competition."
A pair of University of Utah standouts, Scott Veenis and Tague Thorson, rounded out the top five. Then came five straight skiers bound for Junior Worlds: Andrew Phillips in sixth, Travis Ganong in seventh place, Max Hammer in eighth, Bump Heldman in ninth and Nolan Kasper in 10th.
The NDS Invitational is race series blending U.S. Ski Team members, National Development System and regional club athletes, and Junior World Championships-bound racers.
Zamansky praised the idea of the NDS Invitational, noting, "It's great for [the juniors] to size themselves up against folks like Erik Schlopy. He's top 30 in the world. You get to gauge yourself against the best guys in the nation. You get to start closer to them than you normally would."
The schedule concludes Friday with a pair of slalom races in Park City.
