Italy’s Hagen Patscheider won the downhill by the slimmest of margins Tuesday at the the FIS Alpine Junior World Ski Championships in Formigal, Spain. The 20-year-old nipped Norway’s Eian Sandvik by 0.01 seconds, with American Travis Ganong tying for fourth place.
Ganong touched his hip and shoulder on the ground on the entry turn to the first major jump on the Tres Hombres course. The impact dislocated his shoulder, according to U.S. team leader Walt Evans. Amazingly, Ganong was able to rotate the shoulder back into place while continuing down the course.
The gold is Patscheider’s best result in the Junior Worlds so far. Last year in Flachau, he finished eighth in giant slalom. In the Europa Cup he finished eighth twice in a super G within the last month, his best results on that circuit.
“Winning by just one hundredth of a second is luck so I guess it was my lucky day today,” Patscheider said. “I am normally actually better in the technical disciplines rather than in the downhill. Today’s course may look a bit flat but it has some really technical parts and is in fact quite challenging. The course was in a good condition given the circumstances. I will also compete in the super G and GS here in Formigal so let’s see how those will go.”
Sandvik took the second-place finish in stride.
“It is great to win the silver medal and I am not disappointed to lose the gold by just one hundredth of a second,” he said. “I am best in the speed events though also typically do well in slalom. This is the reward for some very hard work – of course I aimed to win a medal but did not think that I’d really make it.”
Sandvik finished 12th in the Junior Worlds downhill last season. Swiss Jonas Fravi finished in third place, 0.28 behind Patscheider. Ganong and Matts Olsson of Sweden each finished 0.41 behind Patscheider.
“I am very happy about this medal. My goal was to make it to the prize-giving ceremony tonight, so the top six, but I did not expect to be on the podium,” Fravi said.
Germany, Austria and Switzerland currently lead the overall medal count at world juniors with two apiece.
The next men’s competition in the slalom on Wednesday.
