WJC – Mayrpeter wins gold in super G

LeMASSIF, Quebec — Austria’s Thomas Mayrpeter added his second medal of the FIS Alpine World Junior Championships today (Feb 24) here, and this time he made it gold, winning the super G from a lowered start due to a heavy wet snow and fog. He had placed second to Swiss Nils Mani in the downhill. In the super G he reversed the placings clocking in .08 ahead of Mani. The bronze went to Norwegian Adrian Smiseth Sejersted.

It was the first super G gold for Austria at World Juniors since 2009. Mayrpeter said he “hoped” he would be advanced to the World Cup level. “I will try my best.”

The B-Kader team member said he would fly home tomorrow for Europa Cup races in Sella Nevea and for Europa Cup finals at Sochi.

It’s a very good slope here,” he said. “I love this race, it’s technical.”

It was technical enough to take 11 skiers out of the picture to DNF’s. There wasn’t a lot of wiggle room with the line as soft snow piled up to the edges of the course. Mayrpeter said that, as long as one stayed in the line, “ … it was very good, not too much snow.”

The top North American on the day was Canada’s Wiliam St-Germain, a local skier presumably with experience on Le Massive’s considerable terrain. He placed ninth. Americans Samuel DuPratt and Nicolas Krause did well, finishing 13th and 15th respectively, about a second off Mayrpeter’s time.

Keifer Christianson and Jack Auty finished 21st and 22nd respectively with Bryce Bennett in 26th.

The race was delayed an hour by weather, and the course shortened much to the chagrin of competitors who had been eyeing the unique starthouse constructed for the championship.

Women’s super G was getting underway as quickly as possible after the men’s finish, utilizing the same course.

In memoriam: The veteran of the staff, McKee started with Ski Racing in 1980. Over the seasons, he covered virtually every aspect of the sport, from the pro tours to junior racing, freestyle and World Cup alpine competition. He wrote the first national stories for many U.S. team stars, and was still around to report on their retirements. “Longevity has its rewards,” he said, “but it’s a slow process.”
