Warner Nickerson’s More Cowbell: Gold Medal Service
Ted Ligety made history in Schladming this year as he won three World Championship titles. It’s a big deal. During the past few years, Ligety has been known as a brilliant giant slalom technician, as he is often blowing the doors off the competition, but winning in three events changes everything. Rather than catching up with Ligety about his his- toric victories, I tracked down Alex Martin, the technician responsible for tuning and waxing his many skis.
“Skiing is in my blood,” said Martin. “My father worked for 50 years at the Kästle factory.” After racing, Martin got a job working for the Austrian women’s team in 1996 as a serviceman and then, two years later, started working for Head as a factory technician.
