Vonn leads first training run in Cortina
Following an off weekend for Lindsey Vonn, in which the American star saw her four-race speed event winning streak come to an end last Saturday, the World Cup overall leader was back to her usual form today (Jan. 12) at the first downhill training run ahead of speed races this weekend in Cortina d Ampezzo, Italy.
Vonn, who won both of this season’s first two downhill races then finished fourth in Bad Kleinkirchheim last weekend while suffering from the effects of a stomach illness, skied the 2460-meter course in one minute, 33.42 seconds today.
Italian Lucia Recchia was 0.38 seconds behind Vonn today followed by Vonn’s U.S. Ski Team teammate Stacey Cook, 0.43 seconds off the leading pace.
Just five days after securing her first career World Cup downhill victory, Elisabth Goergl of Austria had the fourth-fastest time today, 0.57 seconds behind Vonn.
Julia Mancuso, who finished second in the last downhill, had the day’s 10th fastest time, 1.14 seconds back.
Defending overall champ, German Maria Hoefl-Riesch returned to racing today after missing both of last weekend’s races with the flu. She pulled in the day’s ninth fastest time.
There is a second training run scheduled for tomorrow ahead of the downhill race Saturday. A super G is scheduled for Sunday.
