Veterans lead way in first training run at Kitzbuehel

To the surprise of no one it was all veterans leading the way during the first training run today (Jan. 17) ahead of Kitzbuehel’s downhill. Klaus Kroell, Mario Scheiber, Didier Cuche and Bode Miller were the fastest four to complete the run down The Streif under cloudy skies on a relatively smooth, compacted track.

Other top North American results included Erik Guay in 13th and Travis Ganong 22nd.

Wiley Maple crashed into the nets below the Steilhang, but team officials report he was uninjured. He was the lone skier to be listed as did not finish. Three, including Canada’s Louis-Pierre Helie, declined to start and three were disqualified.

Although two sections of the course, the Steilhang and Seidalm Meadow were injected, the consensus was the surface was soft.

“The snow was pretty soft,” said Miller, “pretty similar to what it was last year, but it can be a completely different hill tomorrow.”

Ganong reported, “The nerves are still there. It’s like your second time going to the moon. You know what to expect.”

The schedule calls for super G Friday, downhill Saturday with a Sunday slalom and combined.

In memoriam: The veteran of the staff, McKee started with Ski Racing in 1980. Over the seasons, he covered virtually every aspect of the sport, from the pro tours to junior racing, freestyle and World Cup alpine competition. He wrote the first national stories for many U.S. team stars, and was still around to report on their retirements. “Longevity has its rewards,” he said, “but it’s a slow process.”
