U.S. men’s speed coach McBride to leave after decade on the staffARE, Sweden – John McBride is leaving the U.S. Ski Team after 10 years on the coaching staff, most recently as the leader of the men’s World Cup downhill and super G squad. Pete Bosinger, one of McBride’s assistants, is also planning to depart at the end of the season.

The two coaches announced their decision on Wednesday evening, the night before Bode Miller and Daron Rahlves finished on the top two steps of the podium for the sixth time in two years.

‘I’m going to go raise some cows, sell some organic beef’ said McBride in a Thursday interview. ‘I’ll spend some time with my family, that’s the main thing.’

McBride made his plans known to his colleagues in January at Wengen. He said he would consider coaching at a few projects – camps or races – but nothing full-time. He wants to be at home on the Lost Marbles Ranch in Old Snowmass, Colorado, where he has a wife, two daughters and a ‘couple hundred head of cows.’

After joining the Europa Cup team in 1996, McBride moved up to World Cup in 2001 and took over the main speed-event coaching job in 2002.

McBride is one of the most respected coaches on the World Cup circuit, according to Marius Arnesen, the head coach of the Norwegian men’s team.

‘For me, the team I’ve been looking up to as a speed coach has been the U.S. team because I see the coaching staff is working so good together’ said Arnesen. ‘A happy but serious group, and all the other teams get along really good with them.’

Toni Giger, the head coach of the Austrian men’s team, concurred.

‘He’s a very respected guy, with a very good team that was always a big challenge for us’ said Giger. ‘I personally like him very much.’
