Swiss wins World Jr. slalom, Granstrom seventh

By Published On: February 2nd, 2010Comments Off on Swiss wins World Jr. slalom, Granstrom seventh

Swiss Reto Schmidiger got the World Junior slalom gold medal with two fabulous runs in night competition at Les Planards, France Tuesday (Feb. 2). Austrian Lukas Tippelreither got the silver while Sergei Maitakov gave indication the Russian development program is on track with the bronze.

Colby Granstrom got seventh, the best result of the title meet for the U.S. team, and he did it by matching Schmidiger’s second run time, the fastest of the evening.

Canadian Kelby Masdal posted the 12th best two run time and Nick Daniels of the U.S. was 15th. Wiley Maple was disqualified, while Keiffer Christianson and Michael Ankeny failed to complete the first round. Will Gregorak had been fifth after the first run but could not complete the second.

Canada’s Sasha Zaitsoff was the fourth North American finisher in 28th.

“We were set up for something really special (at the end of the first run),” said U.S. coach Randy Pelkey, “but it just didn’t end up as special as we wanted. The guys are gunning it. They made some aggressive mistakes.”

Pelkey said “They’re gaining every day in experience and I think we’ll see a lot out of them in the future. … They are strong across the board.”

“There was a hole there on the third to last gate,” said Granstrom, “and that probably kept me out of the top five, but I fought and that makes me happy. “

The women were running downhill training. Swiss Jasmin Rothmund was the fastest though French and Austrian skiers controlled the next six placings.

Top U.S. skier was Julia Ford in 40th. Brooke Wales was 48th, Devin Delaney 49th and Vanessa Berther 51st. The Canadians looked a bit better with Victoria Stevens in 23rd, Julia Roth 29th and Catherine Morel was 33rd. Stephanie Irwin failed to finish.

In memoriam: The veteran of the staff, McKee started with Ski Racing in 1980. Over the seasons, he covered virtually every aspect of the sport, from the pro tours to junior racing, freestyle and World Cup alpine competition. He wrote the first national stories for many U.S. team stars, and was still around to report on their retirements. “Longevity has its rewards,” he said, “but it’s a slow process.”
