Veteran World Cup alpiner Sylviane Berthod has undergone successful back surgery, Swiss ski team officials reported Thursday.

MURI BEI BERN, Switzerland — Veteran World Cup alpiner Sylviane Berthod has undergone successful back surgery, Swiss ski team officials reported Thursday.
    The 30-year-old Swiss speed specialist — who has won one World Cup downhill race in her career and collected five other podium results — had an operation Wednesday to correct a herniated disc.
    Berthod has had back pain in the last two years, which reduced strength in her legs. She will remain hospitalized until the weekend.
    Berthod is expected to resume fitness training in two weeks and is hoping to return to competition in November, the team reported.
