Swiss athlete wins ladies’ World Junior Championship slalom
The women’s slalom competition at the FIS Junior Alpine World Ski Championships was a wet one. Only 53 out of 94 athletes made it across the finish line in the first run, and the athletes wearing bib numbers one, two, and three were all on the podium in the ladies’ slalom. Camille Rast, wearing bib three, of Switzerland won with a combined time of 1:42.81.
“It was difficult because of the snow, but the course was good. It was still a good race,” said Rast.
Rain during the event made the conditions extremely challenging.
“In the first run, I started third and in the second run, I had start number 29, so that was easier. I had to ski fast, I did it and I don’t even understand how it happened,” she continued.
Rast’s win came just hours after her teammate Loic Meillard won the men’s giant slalom. Ali Nullmeyer from Canada was the first athlete to push out of the start, and she finished the day in second place, less than 24 hours after winning the Team Event.
Chiara Mair, who was winning after first run, had a solid second run, but didn’t manage to push ahead of Rast in round two. Instead Mair ended in third, taking her second medal at the Junior World Championships.
Nina O’Brien was the top American in 15th place. Galena Wardle and Keely Cashman finished in 24th and 28th, respectively, while Rachael Desrochers skied to 38th place. Patricia Mangan and Maureen Lebel did not finish.
