Swift as a coursing River, American wins opening Youth Olympic Games race

By Published On: February 13th, 2016Comments Off on Swift as a coursing River, American wins opening Youth Olympic Games race

The earth’s youth have descended on Lillehammer, Norway, so that top wintersport athletes can compete in the Youth Olympic Games. Team USA sent several athletes, including two alpine skiers who are proving they can compete on the world stage.

River Radamus, a member of the U.S. development team, packed some punch into his super G run in the 2016 Youth Olympic Games, taking the win over an international field of skiers. Radamus won with a total time of 1:10.62, just 0.03 seconds ahead of Italian Pietro Canzio and 0.51 seconds ahead of  third-place Austrian Manuel Traninger (1:11.03).

“The course was pretty technical today,” Radamus said. “There were a couple of really key spots that I think I nailed. I didn’t really go in with any sort of expectations. I knew that if I executed my lines and skied the way I wanted to, I would have a chance, but this is definitely a welcome surprise. The entire experience here has been really awe-inspiring and something I think I’ll always remember.  The fact that I got to go out and win a medal is something that I don’t think I’ll ever forget and something that I’ll be very proud of for a long time.”

On the women’s side, Nadine Fest and Julia Scheib of Austria went 1-2 while Switzerland’s Aline Danioth rounded out the podium. American Keely Cashman – a member of the National Training Group and Squaw Valley Ski Team – came in 10th place in the super G, 2.59 seconds off of the winning pace.

The action will continue on Sunday with an alpine combined competition for both genders.
