Svindal fastest in training for Wengen, Ganong 4th

Travis GanongWith an “iffy” forecast, officials wanted to be sure to get in a training run ahead of the 83rd Lauberhorn Rennen, and so moved the opening training run up from Wednesday to Tuesday, Jan. 15 and ran on a shortened course, starting from just above the Hundschopf, that steep drop off surrounded by jagged rock so often seen in photos of the Wengen downhill.

Aksel Lund Svindal, enjoying a remarkable speed season so far with no placing worse than fifth in a downhill or super G to date, recorded the fastest time down the still lengthy track, but was just five hundredths ahead of Italian veteran Werner Heel. Kjetil Jansrud was third fastest .36 out and Travis Ganong, the first to start on the day, finished in the fourth spot.

Swiss have won three of the last four editions of this race, but 2012 winner Beat Fuez and 2010 winner Carlo Janka are both in recovery mode and will not compete. 2009 winner Didier Defago finished well down the order in 58th. Austria Klaus Kroell, the winner in 2011, placed ninth.

The light was “flat”, and the course rough according to Heel, and, as usual, it was tiring. Even with the lowered start the times were all over 1.5 minutes. The track was also fast, with speeds clocked as high as 156kph.

About the Author: Hank McKee

In memoriam: The veteran of the staff, McKee started with Ski Racing in 1980. Over the seasons, he covered virtually every aspect of the sport, from the pro tours to junior racing, freestyle and World Cup alpine competition. He wrote the first national stories for many U.S. team stars, and was still around to report on their retirements. “Longevity has its rewards,” he said, “but it’s a slow process.”
